Looking in any newspaper, every night, at the hundred of memorials, you can see the feeling that most people have about bereavement. Inscription offers much more than a 5 line 'in memoriam' for one night. A true life story can be written, including pictures, videos and music, all online 24 hours a day for the whole world to see. Currently, when you pay for the space your memorial takes up on Inscription, you are paying for six months worth of time. However after this period your memorial is kept online COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE, indefinetly. All this for roughly the same price as that one night in the local paper...... The scribe believes this is excellent value for money, but as a way of explanation - Inscription charges for its services for these very good reasons.
The main reason is because it costs money to have a fast, reliable website. Every time you look at a webpage you use 'bandwidth.' The more data that is on the the page you have downloaded - pictures, music, videos etc. the more 'bandwidth' is used up. Inscription has a bandwidth maximum per month that it is permitted to use, anything that is used over that amount has to be paid for. Inscription could use banner advertising, but the scribe believes that advertising could affect the integrity of the site. Once you have signed up to have banner adverts you are at the mercy of advertisers. This is a road the scribe doesn't wish to go down. It is possible that carefully selected companies (grief counsellors etc) may be allowed to advertise on a specific page on the site as an added service to Inscription customers but that is a little way into the future.
It takes a lot of time, effort and money from many people to keep Inscription up to date. Whilst many people do this work for free, certain technical knowledge doesn't come cheap.
Inscription wishes to invest in the new technology that appears on the web. It would be short sighted to believe that the WWW as we know it will still be around in exactly the same form a hundred years from now. That's why Inscription will be constantly updated to take advantage of everything the web has to offer. The web may not be the same, Inscription may not be the same but with the right investment all the Inscriptions entered into the database will still be available for everyone to see.
Inscription wishes to invest in charitable works that affect everyone in their daily lives, cancer research etc. Without the contribution from the public this would not be possible.
